 Content Management System Case Study

Foodservice Center, Inc., a broadline food redistributor of the Midwest region, was in need of a redesigned website that could easily be maintained by their staff. The redistributor chose to place their new website design into the Auctori content management system. In placing their website into the CMS, Foodservice Center is now able to better control their professionally designed website internally. The Auctori team made it possible for Foodservice Center’s product categories to stand out by implementing a more effective way of laying out the logos for the company’s different divisions of food: frozen, refrigerated and dry. To place emphasis on specific products, a customized content area was created at the bottom of each page and rotates advertisements for featured products. Foodservice Center, a B2B company that measure success based upon the drive and commitment of their employees and their valued relationships with customers, suppliers, and buying group partners, provides access to a login portal for their “dealers” to easily obtain information online. In addition, a map was built into their website that makes it easy to view their partners by regions.

Powered by Auctori, Foodservice Center’s redesigned website is easy to maintain and highlights products and other important information, while creating an atmosphere for the redistributor’s communities to access information. Open Source VS. Proprietary

Friday, January 29th, 2010

When searching for the best content management system to power your new website, you can easily become overwhelmed with the amount of options and details to be considered. One of the most important choices to be made when choosing a CMS for your website is to use an open-source CMS platform or a proprietary CMS.

When it comes to comparing costs, at a glance, the open-source option may sound like the way to go.  While an open-source CMS appears to be free on the surface it is far from it when you take into consideration the time and resources required to customize and support the website. Any developer will require a learning curve to master a new technology, and since the technology labor is the most expensive part of any customization project, businesses that choose open-source will inevitably end up paying for this learning curve. The real costs of an open-source CMS solution usually become visible only during implementation. When you consider the time it can take to customize an 0pen-source CMS, the costs can easily outstrip the costs of a proprietary CMS that delivers the functionality in one solution.

The world of technology has seen an abundance of growth in the past several years, and with this growth, has come a wave of specialization across industries and needs. Some firms have developed software specific to the legal industry with legal CMS, while other firms have focused on creating a CMS for municipalities or for non-profits. These firms have typically developed their own software, and architected these CMS platforms to meet the very specific needs of clients by extending and customizing their technology. Due to specialization, flexibility and operational efficiency, proprietary offerings can often outreach their open- source counterparts.

Here is an excellent excerpt from The Net Impact’s blog, regarding details to consider when choosing an open-source CMS:
“There is not a corporate body with open source that is obliged to keep your personalized code and      customization in step with new releases and or required web-wide advances.  Once you pull a version off the shelf then it is an obligation of your team or your development partner to keep things running through all of the changes that move the web forward.  Is there a fee for that?  Sure but you are either paying that fee as a service expense or payroll expense anyway.  Your new site will need fixed, debugged and modernized.  That’s how it is.  Plan on it.  If up time is critical then you need a resource.  24/7 support? Inside or outside is up to you.”   Read the full article on The Net Impact’s Blog

Bottom Line: In the end, choosing a proprietary CMS and forming a strong partnership with a successful, established web development company  can not only result in a better outcome for your company, but also result in more money saved. Not to mention that successful CMS providers are around for a reason, they provide a value for their customers, that they can not find in using an open-source CMS.

There are a lot of options to be considered when choosing between implementing an open source CMS or a proprietary CMS, make sure you do your homework before investing the time and money, into a solution that may not be the right fit for your business.  Never forget that the main purpose of a CMS is to make creating and editing content simple and easy, and you should never sacrifice user-experience for functionality.

Why Build Your Law Firm’s Website in a CMS?

      Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

A Content Management System can Function as a Dynamic Marketing Tool

Implementing a web content management system may just be the simple solution your law firm needs to meet all of its online needs. A law firm’s website should attract new clients, communicate with existing ones and aid in the sharing of information among the lawyers of the firm. If an attorney website is skillfully constructed and has regularly updated content, it can prove to be an effective tool for search engine marketing while still presenting your business in a credible, professional manner.

Law firms many times make two bad assumptions about their web brand.  One assumption is that their website can remain the same static site with the same unchanging content.  They should view their website as a living, ever-changing and interactive space for their communities and prospects.  The other mistake is to consider their site as a place to simply lump articles, biographies and press releases and let the chips fall where they may.  The truth is a well planned marketing campaign will include those elements but not be controlled by them.

From an internal management perspective, too often a legal website is static, meaning even the simplest changes to the website can get bogged down in an IT to-do list or create added expense from outside technical services. Implementing a content management system to build your law firm’s website is an effective way to maintain a professionally designed site that can be updated at anytime, from any location by the lawyers and other staff themselves. These days, content management systems are vastly changing the law firm Internet universe because news, articles, fresh content and announcements can be performed almost instantaneously by office personnel.

How will using a CMS benefit my Firm?
-Content management systems are customizable software solutions, designed specifically in accordance with the discerning needs of the corporate brand and required infrastructure, CMS is all about ease, convenience and the utmost productivity.

-It’s secure. The CMS assures that the right departments and people are authorized to review and add content.

-CMSs deliver efficiency. Partners who are out of the office or working from home can receive and respond to time sensitive information.  Also, content created for almost any purpose such as articles, seminars and other instructive materials; can be easily reused on your website.

-Even the most basic CMS platforms allow for analytics.  There is no need to fly blind.  Google Analytics  as an example, is free, easy to insert and very powerful.  With a little dashboard practice you can really begin to understand the best ways to use your website for communication just by tracking how your visitors find and traffic through the site.

As you can see, content management systems are not only about simplifying work efforts and lowering the cost of productivity. In the marketing sphere, content management systems multitask as a viable promotional tool.

Three ways content management systems can function as an effective marketing tool …

1.)Establish a firm’s credibility in a specific area of law. A website serves as a firm’s online portfolio. It is a place to announce the impact new laws, rulings, litigation scores and other unclassified client-case information. Having the access to keep this information fresh and updated will send the message out to potential clients that your firm is up-to-date, well-organized, an authority in your area and a step above your competitor.

2.)Expose a law firm to media visibility. Content management systems are developed to syndicate news and events to search engines, ultimately disseminating information among media outlets. Whether it’s a high profile case, a partner’s contribution to the community or a law firm’s achievements, a CMS makes it easy to publish and firm updates and legal victories.

It will be easier for potential clients to seek you out on the web. The majority of prospects refer to the Internet to research legal services and find assistance. The best web content management systems are built specifically for Search Engine Optimization purposes. Executed properly, this will increase the likelihood that a potential client will come across your website in their search for legal services.

3.)Is upgrading my current site going to be a disaster? Not all new software integrations are a nightmare. The transition to a content management system can non-intrusive. It does not impose any network outages or require daily operations. Content management systems are customized to accommodate a law firm’s unique communication requirements, making the adjustment a simple and worthwhile process. As for the learning curve, CMS training is minimal. Once the functionality and design decisions have been determined, it is easy to start inserting content and images.  Even the most basic systems use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) format that anyone familiar with Office can pick up very quickly.

In the end, using a CMS to market your law firm is an economical and user-friendly online marketing tool that should prove to be a return on your investment…

      Automatically Expiring Pages

      Friday, November 13th, 2009

One of the more overlooked features of our Auctori content management system is the ability to schedule pages and content for expiration. As of version 2.6 users have had the option to envoke this powerful feature. With the “Expiring Pages” module users can have a page be readily accessible from the moment of publishing to the expiration date. However, unlike most content management systems you may have seen or worked with we don’t simply expire your page at midnight. Auctori gives you the ability to expire your page down to the minute. The applications for something like this are endless, but here are a few that have been used in the past:

      • - Posting of an RFP that expires at 2:30 P.M.
      • - Opening up an online contest for registrants precisely at 7:00 A.M.
      • - Running a promotional advertisement for the duration of a weekend.

Another feature that Auctori brings to the table is the ability to customize the users experience after the page has expired. When the system detects that a page has expired it then informs the user based on what you want them to see. Content doesn’t just simply disappear leaving a customer confused and with potentially broken bookmarks, Auctori would never do that to you. Instead, we allow our users to fully customize the after expiration experience and thusly keep their visitors both informed and happy.
